Get to know some of our summer camp staff

This past week our dedicated summer staff of have been training and planning for the hundreds of Girl Scouts who will spend time out at Camp Daisy this summer. It’s no small feat to prepare the grounds and programs for our girls, but our camp staff are ready and eager to welcome the first session of girls who will kick off the best summer ever!

We caught up with 6 of our returning staff members to get to know them and get their perspective on just what it is that they like so much about Girl Scout Summer Camp!

 

Shuga RayRegina Nelson- Bowls

Camp Name: Shuga Ray

Hometown: Kansas City

School: Avila University

“I returned to camp because I love the feeling that I get from being unplugged and involved with my surroundings. The main reason I returned would be the relationships with young girls that I develop. It makes me feel like I’m a part of something special by impacting young women in our area.”

Story of her camp name: “My grandma “Honey Bee” worked at camp last summer. Before I started I was brainstorming ideas with her. I wanted something that incorporated my real name so I would recognize it. She suggested ‘Shuga Rae’ because I’m sweet like sugar!”

To the caregiver/parent: “Coming to Girl Scout camp is important because it empowers our young women of the future.”

Favorite Memory as a Staffer: “Miss Daisy Pageants where kids dress up as their favorite counselor!”

Favorite Place at Camp Daisy: Ipesi

Favorite Activity: My wake-up call – waking the girls up!

Favorite Girl Scout Song: “I’m a Nut”

Favorite thing to get in the mail: Swaps or “rember-alls”

Favorite Camp Snack: S’mores

“I’m looking forward to skits at campfires and the letters/note I receive from campers!”

Camp Name: Vitamin Dee

Hometown: Topeka, Kansas

School: University of Kansas

“I returned because I love work with kids, becoming a memory of their life and also making new friends. I also enjoy the outdoors.”

Story of her camp name: “Popcorn {Camp Director, Laura Jernigan} came up with it because I could only think of ‘Dee’ so Vitamin Dee just stuck because Vitamin D is in the sun and I’m pretty bright like the sun!”

To the caregiver/parent: “Sending your girl to Girl Scout camp opens the window for your girl to grow as an individual and also helps other find who they are while making friends and learning new skills.”

Favorite Memory as a Staffer: “Whenever I received mail from a camper. It always made me feel like I actually had an impact on them.”

“I returned because I really enjoyed making a difference in young girls lives. It is exciting to see them grow as individuals and I am also hoping to work my way up to a Camp Director for Girl Scouts.”

Story of her camp name: “It just happened and it’s oddly fitting.”

To the caregiver/parent: “Send your girls to camp to help them build their confidence and to empower them to change the world.”

Favorite Memory as a Staffer: “My favorite memory was helping a struggling camper realize she was a leader and could be a positive role model for her fellow campers. She rose to the challenge and was a positive person for the girls to look up to.”

“I returned because I grew up at camp and it gave me lots of experiences I never would have had otherwise. I love getting to make it possible for other girls to have the same opportunities I did.”

Story of her camp name: “Smarty {former camp counselor} was a mentor to me and her camp name was a variation on her last name ‘Smart.” So we took her name, mixed it with my last name ‘Tritz’ and got ‘Smitzy.’”

To the caregiver/parent: “Camp is a place for your child to grow, learn and experience things she normally wouldn’t do, in a safe environment.”

Favorite Memory as a Staffer: “Riding the horses on the back 40, on the hill, as the sun was coming up. It was beautiful!”

“I returned to camp because I had a really good time here last summer. I helped plan the camp schedule so I was really excited to see how it all worked out.”

Story of her camp name: “I am very clumsy and one time I fell out of a golf cart. I was stuck with the name ‘Krash’ forever.” 

To the caregiver/parent: “Every girl should experience Girl Scout camp because it is a safe environment for girls to grow and learn independence and leadership skills while having the time of their lives.”

Favorite Memory as a Staffer: “Hanging out at camp fire waiting for fireworks to start on the first day of summer. The girls and the staff had so much fun singing songs.”

MagnoliaBrenda Blohm

Camp Name: Magnolia

Hometown: Olathe, Kansas but most of Girl Scouting experience is in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“I returned to camp because last year was one of the best summers of my life. The girls I had all had a fantastic time. I wanted to improve more girls’ lives while teaching them new things.”

Story of her camp name: “I got my camp name in a car ride to Camp Oakledge with other staff. As we were thinking of names ‘Magnolia’ came up. It’s fitting since I came to Kansas City from Louisiana.”

To the caregiver/parent: “Girls become leaders when they come to Girl Scout camp.”

Favorite Memory as a Staffer: “My favorite memory is the Miss Daisy Pageant when I let the girls dress me up!”

Favorite Place at Camp Daisy: Powers Ridge

Favorite Activity: Waterfront activities

“I’m looking forward to meeting all the new girls coming to camp for the first time and teaching new skills as well as seeing returning campers again.”
